Home Flags
2002
(in collaboration with María de Mater O'Neill)
Puerto Rico.
The beach side Wildlife area of Piñones
in Puerto Rico is in danger of disappearing to touristic development. The
families that have lived in the area since Spanish colonial times are descendants
of runaway slaves, conserving many of their customs and language patterns.
In the same site of the ruins of a sculpture by Javier Cambre which was
reproduced and shown at the Whitney Museum in Nueva York, the artist made
a community painting workshop where participants created a flag of their
homestead. The flags were painted on distress blankets used in disasters
to warm bodies in hypothermic shock.
