A Sculpture in the Memory
1997
Texas
The artist confronts the erased memory of a small town in Texas. During the Second World War, Princeton, Texas was the site of a concentration camp for German Nazi soldiers captured in North Africa. After the war the site was converted into a baseball park and picnic area.
For four months, the artist dug varios parts of the site until she found some objects associated with the camp. She packed the objects in supermarket foam trays and had the first show at the town's meat market.
The Nazi soldiers had built a grotto in the center of town which lay in ruins. The artist converted the area into a parking lot as part of a one day performance.
The Contemporary Art Museum de Fort Worth was the second site of the exhibition.
The town has restored its town center and added a small museum to mark
that era in its history.
